The Black Rose seems to be a big lore element in Arcane S2. We see it from the get go. During the intro sequence, Ambessa Medarda is shown sitting down, holding a black rose in her hand. We’ll avoid spoilers for those who haven’t watched all episodes yet, but let’s just say we won’t see the last of this.
The Black Rose is a secret organization that currently operates mainly in Noxus. It predates the nation by a long shot; in fact the two founders of the Black Rose were part of the plan that overthrew the witch king Mordekaiser, from whose kingdom Noxus was born.
The organization’s purpose seems to be two fold:
Through Arcane S2 we get to see more of the Black Rose’s influence, building on what we already know from the LoL lore.
The Black Rose was created by two powerful beings: LeBlanc, the master of illusions, and Vladimir, the blood mage. Together they shared the dream of overthrowing Mordekaiser, the ruthless sorcerer king whose tyrannical rule had the land in fear. Using cunning and their mastery of the arcane, LeBlanc and Vladimir brought down Mordekaiser, and created a new power structure - the kingdom that would later become Noxus.
Since its creation the Black Rose has had two main goals:
The Black Rose operates in the shadows, its influence is quiet but effective, shaping Noxian politics and triggering major events throughout the empire’s history. They have a reach into almost every corner of Noxian power, so they can manipulate outcomes to their advantage, whether through coups, orchestrated betrayals or subtle shifts in alliances.
Black Rose members go to great lengths to keep their identities hidden, often using masks and secret identities even among themselves. This secrecy is key to their operations, so they can avoid detection and suspicion. The one exception seems to be Elise.
The organization’s network goes deep into Noxian nobility and the military, rooted in the highest echelons of society while being omnipresent and invisible. This clandestine structure allows the Black Rose to be both flexible and resilient, to keep their power across generations as they operate from the very heart of Noxus.
At the core of the Black Rose is its matron, LeBlanc. As the master of illusions she has shaped Noxian history by pulling the strings of influential figures and deceiving both friends and foes. Known as the Pale Woman, LeBlanc’s presence is both eerie and powerful. She can be in multiple places at once thanks to her ability to adopt different identities. Beyond her cunning she has knowledge of ancient magic that allows her to live forever and keep the Black Rose stable over the centuries, her current age is unknown but it appears that even a thousand years ago she was known and already powerful. LeBlanc is not only a leader but a symbol of the organization’s philosophy - to remain hidden yet always in control.
Vladimir, co-founder of the Black Rose, complements LeBlanc’s abilities with his own blood magic. Although part of the cabal he has chosen a more public life, he has his own cult the Crimson Circle, a separate but equally dark organization. His followers see him as an enigmatic figure of power and he encourages their devotion but remains steadfastly loyal to the Black Rose’s overall goals. Vladimir’s public persona allows him to influence the people of Noxus directly, adding a more visible layer to the Black Rose’s otherwise hidden activities. Like LeBlanc he uses magic to keep himself alive and has been part of Noxian history for centuries.
Elise is a dark figure within the Black Rose. Originally from a noble house she sought out the forbidden magic of the Shadow Isles to gain the favor of the spider-god Vilemaw. This pact changed her physically, granting her arachnid like abilities but at a terrible cost. In return for her new powers she supplies Vilemaw with sacrifices, gathering victims from the unsuspecting. Elise’s role in the Black Rose is unique, she is a link to the Shadow Isles, sometimes retrieving arcane artifacts or forbidden knowledge that strengthens the cabal’s grip on Noxus. Driven by power lust she is a force to be reckoned with, using her gifts and her loyalty to the Black Rose to keep her place.
Cassiopeia is a recent addition to the Black Rose. A descendant of the powerful Du Couteau family she was drawn to the organization by her ambition and desire for power. On a mission to get ancient Shuriman artifacts Cassiopeia was cursed, turned into a snake like creature. Her curse didn’t diminish her ambitions though and she remains loyal to the Black Rose’s goals. Cassiopeia’s involvement with the Black Rose is both personal and strategic, she is aligned with other powerful figures in Noxus and can pursue her quest for arcane knowledge. She is a example of the lengths one will go to for power even when it comes at a personal cost.
The Black Rose’s influence goes beyond its inner circle to many champions in Noxus and beyond. Rell, was subjected to brutal experiments at a Black Rose academy that tried to control her powers.
Riven, wields a sword enchanted by LeBlanc herself, unknowingly carrying the Black Rose’s influence with her.
Swain, the current ruler of Noxus, knows of the Black Rose’s plans and has vowed to dismantle the organization, making him both an enemy and a target.
With the Black Rose in Arcane Season 2 we get to see this mysterious organization in a different light. While League of Legends players know the Black Rose through LeBlanc, Elise and Cassiopeia’s stories, we can now see it from the eyes of the outsider and it’s truly terrifying.
First we saw how it drove Ambessa to Piltover, in season 1 she talks how her son, Kino Mel’s brother, who challenged Black Rose and paid for it the ultimate price. Now after the loss of her heir she arrived to protect her daughter and ensure the legacy of her line.
It also appears that Ambessa is running away because of the loot she stole. What is it? We do not know it yet, but we are sure to find out soon.
The show’s take on the Black Rose could also bring new perspectives on its members if we see LeBlanc, Elise or Cassiopeia in the story. Their presence would add depth to the organization’s inner workings.
