If you’ve ever received a penalty in League of Legends or wanted to review a past interaction, Riot Games provides players with limited access to their League chat logs. These logs mainly focus on communications tied to disciplinary actions, typically available in penalty notifications (such as chat restrictions, suspensions, or bans). However, for players wanting to view general, non-penalized interactions, retrieving full chat logs can be more challenging due to Riot’s limited archival options. This guide outlines how to access available chat logs and some workarounds for maintaining your own records.

If you want to see entire history of your chat logs you will have to open a data request ticket.

Interested in unbanning your account? Check our dedicated article about that.

Keep in mind that if you get chat restriction you should usually see chat logs from at least one game that got you banned. If you do not you can get it by opening a ticket.

Requesting Your Data from Riot Games

Riot Games, as part of its commitment to transparency and player rights, allows players to request their data in line with GDPR and similar privacy regulations. This data often includes match histories, account creation details, and, in some cases, recent or specific chat records tied to penalties. When Riot Games sends your data back, it is also agreeing that this is unadultered information in their servers, so these records will stand as proof if you wish to appeal to something pertaining to your logs.

Here’s how you can go about requesting your data from Riot.

Understanding What Data You Can Request

When you request your data from Riot Games, the company provides a comprehensive package containing information Riot has collected about your account. This includes all the data filed under the Privacy Notice section, regarding "personal info", which is defined as "any information the user provides directly (such as account information when registering for an account), information recorded automatically (either with the League of Legends client, the Riot Games Launcher, the Vanguard application, or with technologies like cookies in sites under the riotgames.com domain), and information received from third parties (like social media companies)".

  1. Personal Info You Provide:
These particular types of personal information depend on how you interact with Riot Games, like which services you use and how you use them. Information that is de-identified, aggregated, or anonymized so that it cannot be used to identify an individual is not considered personal info. This is often the information that goes into statistics and user metrics, and Riot commits to maintain it anonymous once any identifiers have been stripped from the personal information. As such, this kind of anonymized data cannot be accessed through requesting your data.
The personal info you provide will often include all the information inputted to register your account, support-related info (like submitted Player Support tickets), demographic info, and your account information (preferred game settings, keybindings, friends list, your mastery and rune pages, etc). Other info recorded and directly accessible through the API includes in-game actions and build order, which is what sites like Porofessor and
op.gg use to evaluate your performance.
While Riot Games does not automatically log all voice and text chat records, it reserve the right to collect and use this information to enforce its Terms of Service
  1. Personal Info Riot Games Collects:
Common examples include your activity and interactions, information about your device and ISP, and network performance. Riot Games uses cookies and scripts to put these in log files for use in monitoring, enhancing user experience, analysis and advertising purposes.
  1. Personal Info Collected From Third Parties:
Riot Games obtains data from third party integrations if you activate their services in connection with the Riot Services. For example, if you link your Facebook account with your Riot Games account, Meta may disclose personal info to us in accordance with Facebook’s privacy notice and your Facebook privacy settings. This can include personal info like your name, profile picture, gender, age range, username, language, country, your friends and other personal info you have made available on the platform. Please make sure you’re comfortable with what they might disclose by reviewing their posted policies, and if applicable, modifying your privacy settings directly on their service.
Riot also collects information from other platforms, such as Google Play or the Apple App Store.

Submitting A Data Request

To retrieve data Riot has collected on your account, submit a request through Riot’s official support channels.

  1. Visit support.riotgames.com and log in with your League of Legends account.
  1. Navigate to the “Submit a Ticket” button located at the top of the support page, and click the game you want to get the data of.
  1. From the drop-down menu, select "Account Management, Data Requests or Deletion".
  1. Fill out the form selecting "Formal Personal Data Request" as your inquiry. Note that you do not legally need a reason to request your data under both the GDPR and the CCPA. Most jurisdictions will not require you to have a reason to request your data.
Once submitted, Riot’s support team will review your request, typically responding within 30 days, though response times can vary based on demand and the complexity of your request. For accounts based in the EU, Riot strictly follows GDPR’s 30-day response timeframe.
  1. What to Expect in Your Data Package
Upon receiving your data request, Riot will prepare a downloadable package containing files with your account’s history. The package typically includes:
Account Summary: Basic details on your account creation, region, and associated email.
Gameplay History: Files detailing your match history, character usage, and performance metrics.
Purchase Records: Itemized history of in-game transactions, including RP purchases.
Penalty History: Details on any penalties your account has incurred, with chat logs related to each penalty.

Limitations on the Data Provided

Riot Games limits the retention of sensitive data, meaning your package may not include every interaction, such as casual chat logs. Chat logs included are typically limited to those involved in support cases or disciplinary actions, reflecting Riot’s emphasis on moderation over personal data storage.

Non-penalized chats are typically not archived long-term by Riot, so you may not receive general chat logs in your data package.
If you encounter issues or if Riot’s data package is missing critical information, you can submit a follow-up request for clarification. You can ubmit a follow-up ticket on
support.riotgames.com, clarifying your concerns and asking for any specific data that may have been excluded.

If you feel that Riot is unjustly withholding data, and you’re in the EU, you can contact GDPR regulatory bodies for additional guidance on your options and rights.

Summary

Generally, your casual and unpenalized chat logs are not internally recorded. If they are, they are often anonymized. You can, however, request your penalized chatlogs with a Formal Personal Data Request. Given that the account's still somewhat active, penalized chat logs won't be deleted. They will remain archived in the servers until further notice.
