League of Legends combines lots of fantastic genres into one exciting game. There are aspects of fantasy, RPG elements, PVP (Player vs Player) elements and a free to play model. All of this together creates the genre known as a MOBA (or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena in case you've wondered what MOBA stands for).

As good as League of Legends is, it’s common for players to get bored and want something new every now and then. MOBA Games Like League of Legends

Here are a collection of MOBA games like League of Legends. All the games in this list use MOBA elements and offer a similar playstyle to League of Legends. If you are looking for an alternative MOBA to try out here are 5 that we highly recommend.

  • Games like League of Legends Dota Icon

    DOTA 2

    Official Website: Dota Website

    Cheapest Price: Steam

Key Features: MOBA; Fantasy; 5v5; Items; Champions; Free.

    Metacritic Rating: 6.5/10 (10652 Ratings)

DOTA 2 is the main competitor to League of Legends and it’s probably the most similar of all the games like League of Legends in this list.

It’s basically a free to play MOBA which uses micro-transactions to generate revenue similar to League of Legends skins, although in DOTA 2 they use this to fund their huge eSports scene (Not as big as LoL though!).

The main difference between League of Legends and DOTA 2 is the speed of the gameplay. League of Legends is a fast paced game compared to the slower gameplay of DOTA 2. This encourages more 1v1’s and less roaming than in League of Legends and also leads to some unique champion abilities. We also found that the combat in DOTA 2 lasts longer than League of Legends.

One huge plus is the in game voice chat, which made communication between players much easier than on League of Legends. While we don’t want to spark a debate of which game is better we do suggest you give DOTA 2 a try – It can be great fun with friends and both DOTA 2 and League of Legends are fantastic games which target different audiences within the MOBA niche.

  • pubg game icon

    PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds

    Official Website: PUBG Website

    Cheapest Price: G2A

Key Features: Open world; 3rd person; FFA; Beta.

Metacritic Rating: 7.2/10 (25 Critic Reviews)

Recently bursting straight into the gaming scene is PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Based off the film Battle Royale, the game puts 100 players on a deserted island where they must fight to the death to become the winner. Currently in early access and development, the game has already sold over 13 million copies and is one of the fastest growing online games.

Players start the game in a plane where they parachute out and land on the island where they must collect items and supplies to fight off other players. With so many people playing and such a vast open world, the replayability of this game is great. You’ll never get bored with constant updates and new additions which make the game very unique.

  • Games like League of Legends Smite Logo

    Smite

    Offical Website: Smite Website

    Cheapest Price: Steam

Key Features: MOBA; Gods; 5v5; Third Person; Free.

    Metacritic Rating: 8.3/10 (802 Ratings)

Smite introduces a new aspect to the MOBA genre which both League of Legends and DOTA 2 don’t have: Third person cameras.

Yup, Smite avoids the typical isometric view and opts for a camera view similar to that on World of Warcraft. Aside from this notable difference, the game remains Free to play and in all other aspects has stuck very closely to the MOBA genre.

Players can choose from a list of champions (deities from Norse, Greek, Egyptian and other religions), farm in lanes, slay jungle camps, upgrade your abilities and buy items. One thing that separates smite from games like League of Legends is how many game modes it offers.

Aside from the traditional 5v5 brawl, known as Summoners Rift, it also offers a 1v1 jousting mode, a random god selection mode and domination (similar to the old gamemode dominion).

For the cosmetic lovers, the game uses the same free to play model as League of Legends where players can spend gems on skins and gods as well as an option to unlock all the current gods as well as those that are released in the future.

  • Heroes of the Storm moba icon

    Heroes of the Storm

    Offical Website: HOTS Website

    Cheapest Price: Blizzard

Key Features: MOBA; Fantasy; 5v5; No Items; Blizzard Universe; Mini-games; Free.

    Metacritic Rating: 6.7/10 (1098 Ratings)

It was only a matter of time before Blizzard decided to move into the MOBA genre but their attempt at a game similar to League of Legends is not actually that bad. It’s a free to play high quality hero brawler which revolves around 5v5 battles in places in the Blizzard universe. Players can choose characters from World of Warcraft, Starcraft or Diablo and each of these has been translated into the MOBA realm with numerous abilities and a choice of passives. The game separates itself from other MOBAs by offering fast paced simple game play in games that last on average around 15-20 minutes.

The game has no items or gold and the team has one level. Levelling up offers players a choice of different abilities or upgrades to current abilities through a talent system. The jungle is radically different from League of Legends too because the camps are mercenaries which will fight for your team once defeated. The maps feature fun little game modes which players must complete to help them onto their victory completing the whole arcade feel of this game.

  • super monday night combat moba icon

    Super Monday Night Combat

    Offical Website: SMNC Website

F: This game is no longer available

Key Features: FPS; Arena; Third Person; Free; Low population.

    Metacritic Rating: 3.7/10 (212 Ratings)

Super Monday Night Combat (also known as SMNC) is a free to play MOBA which uses third person shooting elements where players control a character known as a pro. The pros will then be placed onto one of two teams who must destroy the other teams base – known as the Moneyball.

The game is similar to League of Legends with 10 players but it also offers a survival mode in which players play against waves of bots to defend their own Moneyball. The only downside to this game is that it has lost a lot of the player base and finding a game can be difficult. The best option is to try to find 10 people who want to play and create a custom game.

  • Games like League of Legends Atlas Reactor

    Atlas Reactor

    Offical Website: Atlas Website

    Cheapest Price: Steam

Key Features: MOBA; Unique; Turn Based; 2v2; 6v6; Free.

    Metacritic Rating: 7.8/10 (40 Ratings)

Atlas Reactor is a MOBA game mixed featuring turn based game play. This creates a unique experience where the MOBA rewards strategy, and not just reflexes. Players control one hero each (known as freelancers), up to a total of 6 players. These freelancers each have five abilities which can be changed during the pre-load, creating a huge combination of possible abilities.

During each turn players choose whether to move or attack, activating their abilities, which the game then plays out. This MOBA is fantastic for players with the strategic mind, but not the dexterous fingers, and it reminds us of a modern version of Chess. This game focuses on learning abilities, memory and tactics.

  • Games like League of Legends Paragon Icon

    Paragon

    Official Website: Paragon Website

F: This game is no longer available

Key Features: MOBA, Third Person, Beta, Free

    Metacritic Rating: 6.8/10 (11 Ratings)

Still, in open beta, Paragon is a new third person MOBA style game with incredible graphics and gameplay. With 25 champions, currently available to play and a new one being released every 3 weeks, the developers are putting plenty of time and effort into this game.

Available on Windows and PS4, players from both systems can battle together in the same area to prove which really is the master race. With it still being fresh in beta that are plenty of upcoming changes that could be added to the game. If you want to be apart of the next big MOBA game before it explodes in popularity, then Paragon is definitely worth trying.

    Official Website: Awesomenauts Website

If you’re sick of 3D games and want something a bit more indie, then Awesomenauts was made especially for you. With an approval rating of 88% on the Steam Store it’s hard to say anything bad about this game.

Slightly different from the other serious ultra-competitive MOBA’s, Awesomenauts is a great fast-paced multiplayer platformer that will bring back memories of classics such as Worms. Supernova

    Official Website: Supernova Website

    Metacritic Rating: TBD (0 Ratings)

If you’re a big fan of Starcraft, then the chances are you’ll love this sci-fi MOBA, it’s truly out of this world! Based on a space theme, Supernova moves away from the traditional fantasy based MOBAs and brings a new setting to the genre.

With a range of different “commanders” to play in game, you can pick from mech pilots to mercenaries or go completely out of this world and play as an alien. The game also adds a new level of customization by allowing players to upgrade and modify their minions. This unique feature can often be the difference between stunning victory and crushing defeat. So what are you waiting for? Swap your bow and arrows for laser guns and dive into the futuristic world of Supernova.

    Strife

    Official Website: Strife Website

    Cheapest Price: Steam

Key Features: MOBA, Fast Paced, Strategy, Free

    Metacritic Rating: 6.0/10 (4 Ratings)

This MOBA game takes a different path compared to DOTA and League of Legends. With its fast-paced action that’s easy to play, Strife is trying to make the MOBA genre-less toxic. By putting more action in the game and making it less complicated, Strife hopes to rid the game of bad players. As ambitious as it sounds it seems they have done a good job!

Available to play for free from the Steam Store, with plenty of new unique features that you won’t find in other MOBA’s, Strife is a refreshing addition to the MOBA genre.

Unlike other MOBA’s, when staying out of combat for a period of time your health and manage will significantly regenerate. This allows you to spend more time near the action instead of going back to base. All heroes get their own pet sidekicks which accompany them around the battlefield and grant them special buffs. If you’re sick of seeing “GG 2EZ” in your game, then you should most definitely give strife a try.

    Prime World

  • Battlerite Logo

    Battlerite

    Official Website: Battlerite Website

    Cheapest Price: Steam

Key Features: Ranked play, 2v2, 3v3, MOBA

    Steam Rating: 92% Positive

If you like fighting games but can’t deal with all the tedious levelling, then you’ll LOVE this game. Released in September 2016, the game has been in early access for several months and received plenty of positive reviews.

Although the game currently doesn’t have a Metacritic rating, there are plenty of reviews on Steam giving it an impressive 92%.

A cross between the World of Warcraft arena and a MOBA, this game is seriously fast paced. With games lasting 10 - 15 minutes you can get stuck right into the action without waiting ages to respawn or to reach the maximum level. The game focuses on fighting in the arena and is all about skill. There’s no levelling required so you can jump straight into the action and start smashing people in the face.

After a certain amount of time, the arena starts to shrink which encourages players to fight each other or risk falling into the abyss! To summarize, it’s basically like League of Legends just without the annoying levelling required.

  • Red tides game icon

    Art of War: Red Tides

    Official Website: Steam Page

    Cheapest Price: Steam

Key Features: Free to play; strategy; MOBA; Indie; RTS.

Set in the distant future, Art of War: Red Tides allows different teams to battle each other on various platforms (mobile, PC, tablet, etc). With plenty of different races to choose from, players can customize their armies and units before heading into battle. Once in the game, players fight each other with their arms with an aim to destroy their base. Similar to League of Legends, once the enemies base is destroyed, you win!

The game also allows you to team up with other players and fight your opponents together or take on everyone yourself. With over 300 units in the battle and over 120 different kinds of units available, this makes for some interesting scenarios and fierce gameplay. If you enjoy managing units and armies, then you’ll love Art of War: Red Tides. Available to play for free on Steam, it’s worth giving a try to see if you like it.

  • Deadbreed game icon

    Deadbreed

    Official Website: Deadbreed Website

F: This game is no longer available

Key Features: 3v3; PvE; Free to play; MOBA; Beta.

    Metacritic Rating: N/A

Deadbreed is a “creepy-themed” (their words not ours) multiplayer MOBA game with RPG features. With a spooky theme, this game is obviously not for everyone, but players who enjoy something different will love the vast range of zombie and skeleton champions. Battles are 3 against 3 in a dark and grimy battleground that will leave chills down your spine.

In the game, players can earn experience and level up their champions they frequently play to make them even more powerful. Combine this with the ability to summon totem creatures that aid you in battle and Deadbreed is a unique game that differs greatly from your regular MOBA. Available to play for free online, once you start playing this dark MOBA you’ll have a hard time going back to the light!

  • Games like League of Legends vainglory Logo

    Vainglory

    Offical Website: Vainglory Website

    Cheapest Price: Steam

Key Features: MOBA; Fast-Paced; IOS; Free.

    Metacritic Rating: 8.8/10 (128 Ratings)

This is an excellent MOBA if you’re looking to experience some new Champions in a more casual game than League of Legends. Not only are games shorter – generally averaging around 20 minutes – but you can also play using an IOS device!

The controls are easier to get a hang of than you might think, and the graphics are actually pretty impressive! As for the learning curve, it’s pretty steep if you’ve never played MOBA’S before. That being said, if you’ve navigated to this post then we’re going to assume that you’ve played a couple of games of LoL. This is definitely one to try out, if you haven’t already.

Competitive Games Like League Of Legends

If it’s the competitive side of League of Legends that you enjoy then here are some great games like League of Legends ranked ladder. These games aren’t MOBAs but they are all great games that have a huge following in the eSports scene and have ranked ladders that you can climb solo or with your friends.

  • Counter Strike Global Offensive Logo

    Cheapest Price: G2A

    Metacritic Rating: 7.7/10 (2730 Ratings)

Key Features: FPS; 5v5; Ranked; Paid; Items.

Counter-Strike is arguably the most successful line of FPS games that has ever existed. In competitive mode there are two teams of 5 players who take it in turns to play as both the terrorists and the counter-terrorists. The most common game mode is bomb defuse in which the terrorists attempt to plant a bomb onto marked locations on the map. The defenders must stall the terrorists or kill them all before the bomb explodes. It’s fast paced, great fun and has a seriously strong competitive scene. It’s unlike other games like League of Legends because it’s a first person shooter but it’s an all-round great competitive game.

  • Starcraft 2 Logo

    Starcraft II

    Offical Website: SC2 Website

    Cheapest Price: G2A

Key Features: RTS; 1v1; Ranked; Paid; Blizzard.

    Metacritic Rating: 8.2/10 (3095 Ratings)

Starcraft II is usually not put into the same category as games like League of Legends because let’s be honest; It’s not very similar to League of Legends at all. Starcraft II is a great competitive real time strategy game which was developed by blizzard and focuses on simple strategies and their execution. Players can choose from three available races each with different units, buildings and strategies. The 1v1 ranked ladder is popular and relies on only yourself with no team mates to blame and there is a great arcade full of fun mini games like DOTA.

    Offical Website: WoT Website

    Cheapest Price: WoT

Key Features: MMO; Tanks; 5v5; Ranked; Free.

World of Tanks puts you in the driving seat of a variety of tanks and battle it out against other players. This unique MMO game allows you to heavily customize your vehicle and battle it out against other players from around the world. This has earned its place in our list of games like League of Legends because it has teams, strategy, customization and it requires skill. It’s a great game to play if you fancy something different and like most games on this list it uses the free to play model.

  • Hearthstone Logo

    Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

    Offical Website: Hearthstone Website

    Cheapest Price: Blizzard

Key Features: Card Game; 1v1; Free; Blizzard; Ranked.

    Metacritic Rating: 6.2/10 (1705 Ratings)

Hearthstone is probably the best card game available for PC. It’s based on the well-established Warcraft universe which allowed it to very quickly gather the interest of the 12.5 million World of Warcraft players (although this number has recently decreased). It’s a traditional yet simple card game with rules that are simple and quick to learn, lots of fun cards with unique abilities, 9 different heroes to choose from each with a different ability and unique cards and the game also offers many different game modes. It’s a great game to play while waiting for your League of Legends queue and it might not be as similar to the other games like League of Legends in this list but it’s too good to ignore. The game is free to play and daily quests allows players to quickly gather the gold they need to enter tournaments or buy card packs although there is the option to use cash if you would like build your card collection at a quicker pace.

  • Overwatch Logo

    Overwatch

    Offical Website: Overwatch Website

    Cheapest Price: G2A

Key Features: MMO; Shooter; Blizzard; Unreleased; FPS; Paid.

    Metacritic Rating: 6.8/10 (4351 Ratings)

Overwatch is the latest in Blizzard games that is a team-based FPS where heroes will battle each other out. Players can choose from a large list of heroes (which continues to grow) each with unique abilities and playstyles. We aren’t exactly sure on what Overwatch will bring but it’s already gathered interest in the eSports community with various teams signing up. This is similar to other games like League of Legends because it requires the same core skills: Teamwork, knowledge and a good mouse hand. We’ll have to wait and see how popular this game is upon release but from what we’ve seen so far it looks fantastic.

  • Command and Conquer Logo

Command & Conquer: The Ultimate Collection

Offical Website: C&C: Ultimate Collection Website

    Cheapest Price: Amazon

    Key Features: Strategy; multiplayer; RTS

    Metacritic Rating: 7.6/10 (10 ratings)

    This is more of a bundle of games than a single game, as it comes with 17 action-packed titles that span across 3 huge universes. The basic premise of Command & Conquer is like Starcraft, in fact, many would tell you that Starcraft was directly inspired by C&C, and it’s easy to see why;

They both involve fast-paced combat and resource management – usually at the same time, so while you’ve got a procession of tanks rolling up on your western front, you’re also struggling to maintain your stock of Tiberium – Without which your base would fall apart.

One of the main similarities between League of Legends and C&C is the blood pumping adrenaline rush that comes with trying to manage multiple elements while on the brink of defeat. Most RTS games will share similarities with MOBA’s – After all, it was an RTS game that gave rise to the very first MOBA.

Some may find the graphics outdated, but if you’re looking for a retro feel then this is one to consider!

Fantasy Games Like League of Legends

League of Legends has created a fantastic universe full of exciting lore (or at least it was once) and creativity. If you are looking for fantasy games like League of Legends then here’s a list of games which offer a fantastic creative universe for you to get sucked into. These games are very time consuming but if you love lore then they are a perfect match for you.

  • world of warcraft logo

    World of Warcraft

    Offical Website: WoW Website

    Cheapest Price: G2A

Key Features: MMORPG; Blizzard; Paid; PVP; PVE.

    Metacritic Rating: 7.3/10 (2238 Ratings)

World of Warcraft is the obvious answer for a game that offers great fantasy elements with powerful lore. The obvious downside to this game is the monthly subscription fee but if you enjoy playing it it’s well worth it. There is a great PvP scene using arenas and battlegrounds as well as tonnes of PvE content for players to explore. There are thousands of quests all over the huge world across many expansions which allow players to fully understand the story behind their favourite Warcraft characters. It’s a great game which is certainly like League of Legends in terms of lore – but not so similar in game play.

  • diablo 3 logo

    Diablo III

    Offical Website: Diablo Website

    Cheapest Price: G2A

Key Features: PVE; Blizzard; RPG; Action; Fast-paced; Paid.

    Metacritic Rating: 4.0/10 (9317 Ratings)

Diablo is a fun game that is similar to League of Legends in the fantasy aspect and that the player has 4 abilities, but this is where the similarities end. Key Features: RTS; PVP; MOBA; Free.

    Metacritic Rating: 7.9/10 (29 Ratings)

AirMech is an RTS game which can be played like a MOBA. This is one of the most similar games like League of Legends in this list because of this aspect. It’s a PVP game where you must fight against other players using limited technology after an apocalypse. While this game can be played as a MOBA it still retains the RTS feel and if you find that there aren’t enough players online you can always play it on single player to pass some time. It’s not the best game on the list but it is unique and that makes it worth checking out.

    Cheapest Price: G2A

Key Features: RPG; Single-player; Paid; Fantastic Lore; Highly Rated.

    Metacritic Rating: 9.3/10 (11206 Ratings)

The Witcher III is the third instalment in the Witcher series and it’s probably one of the best single player RPGs that has ever been made. It brings the best aspects from Dragon Age and Skyrim into a world bigger than GTA V. It’s got so many things to do, the writing is intelligent and the environment is beautiful. Players often find the controls can be awkward but if you can get over that this is one of the best games you could ever play. It’s only like League of Legends because of the fantasy elements but if you ever find yourself without an internet connection then this will pass the time for you.

  • Dawn of War III Logo games like league of legends

Warhammer 40k: DAWN OF WAR III

    Offical Website: DOW III Website

    Cheapest Price: G2A

Key Features: Multiplayer; RTS; Sci-Fi; MOBA

    Metacritic Rating: 4.5/10 (439 ratings)

    This title is even more MOBA like than the other RTS games on this list! To succeed, you must destroy a shield generator, then a turret, and finally your enemy’s base. This style of pushing through various obstacles will be familiar to any League of Legends player, but it also adds to the strategy;

You can no longer go for boring; early game rushes like you could in previous releases of the franchise; Now your army is almost guaranteed to be blasted to bits for overcommitting, although despite this, combat remains as chaotic and challenging as ever.

Controlling an army of melee units who are all being stunned and knocked back left right and centre can be overwhelming for new players. Plus, there’s also the escalation phase to worry about every 10 minutes as the battle becomes increasingly more difficult, and all this has to be done while trying to capture control points.

  • Warhammer total war logo

    Total War: Warhammer

    Offical Website: TW: Warhammer Website

    Cheapest Price: G2A

Key Features: RTS; Fantasy; Action; Strategy

    Metacritic Rating: 7.3/10 (674 ratings)

Unlike many RTS games, the camera angle puts you up close to the action; You can see every sword swing and every death. This adds a lot to the immersion, and when your units begin to fall, you feel it. Plus, you’ll find many of the factions from the original tabletop games, including Vampires and Greenskins.

One of the good things about playing an RTS instead of League of legends is that you don’t have any noob teammates to drag you down, but you also don’t have any noob teammates to blame when things go wrong.

Key Features: RTS; Fantasy; Great plot; Blizzard.

    Metacritic Rating: 9.1/10 (1333 Ratings)

If you’ve ever played World of Warcraft, then you’ll likely have heard of Warcraft 3. It’s an exceptional RTS game, renown for its challenging battles, plus, the exceptional story.

Warcraft is also known for its intriguing storyline, and eventually other developers began to realize that players want more than just an RTS. Don’t get us wrong, Age of Empires is great, but it has nothing on the epic tale of Arthas, the Lich King.

As a League of Legends player, you’re no stranger to strategizing, and Warcraft 3 will expect you to do so in order to achieve victory. With that said, It’s an old game and doesn’t look the best – don’t worry though. Blizzard recently announced that an updated version of this classic game will soon be released, and you can learn more about its visual changes here!

Naturally we had to mention this one – while not a MOBA, it has plenty of similarities with LoL, but before we delve into those, let’s discuss what TFT is.

If you haven’t played LoL recently, you might not have heard of this game that Riot has been pushing heavily. At its core, it’s quite a hands-off game – allow us to elaborate.

Your objective is to build an army using Champions out of League of Legends. These Champions will each have one ability from the game, which means that LoL players have a pretty big advantage right off the bat.

You arrange these troops on a board, and allow them to duke it out, carefully crafting your army as you go. It’s actually helped make an up and coming style of game infinitely more popular; Auto-Chess. If you’d like an example of another type of Auto-chess game, DOTA Underlords is one you might have heard of.

Tft was supposedly released as a temporary game mode, however it has since been announced that it will in fact be sticking around. Oh and to top it all off, it's completely free.
